AREAS OF EXPERTISE:

Soil microbiology with an emphasis on microbial community structural-functional relationships in managed ecosystems. Currently, I am studying the effects of forest fuel reduction practices on soil microbial communities and C pools, as well as the effects of deficit irrigation practices on rhizosphere microbial communities.

 

GRADUATE STUDENTS:

Bill Moore (M.S. candidate). Bill is investigating the diversity and role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for restoration of degraded rangeland soils.

Crystal Freeman (M.S. candidate, coadvised by Dr. Jim Ippolito). Crystal is studying biosolids land application as a reclamation strategy for mine tailings in Leadville, Colorado.

Aida Jiménez-Esquilín, Ph.D. 2006. Thesis title: Fire Effects on Soil Microbial Community Structure and Function in a Ponderosa Pine Ecosystem. Aida is currently a post-doctorate with USDA-ARS Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center in Beaver, West Virginia. Tarah Sullivan, M.S. 2004. Thesis title: Above- and Belowground Response to Biosolids in Rangeland Soils. Tarah is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Kiera Coffin, B.S. 2007, Soil Science with a minor in Microbiology. Kiera conducted laboratory and field studies to evaluate the potential for biosolids to alter antibiotic - resistance patterns of soil microorganisms. She also conducted studies to determine the effects of limited irrigation practices on rhizosphere microbial communities. She currently works for Solix Biofuels in Fort Collins, CO.
